March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about the importance of prevention and early detection. Colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in the United States, but when detected early, it is highly treatable—and often preventable. Most colorectal cancers begin as precancerous polyps in the colon or rectum. Routine screening allows these polyps to be identified and removed before they develop into cancer. Screening is recommended starting at age 45 for most adults, or earlier for those with certain risk factors or a family history. A colonoscopy remains the gold standard for screening. This safe and effective procedure allows a specialist to examine the colon and remove precancerous polyps during the same visit. If results are normal, screening is typically repeated every 10 years. If you need a referral, you can contact our office directly. For patients at average risk, Cologuard® is an FDA-approved, at-home screening option. This non-invasive test checks a stool sample for blood and abnormal DNA markers. If negative, it is repeated every three years. A positive result would require follow-up with a colonoscopy. Our team is happy to assist you with this option as well. At MedNOW, we are committed to making preventive care simple and accessible. Whether you choose a colonoscopy or an at-home test, taking this step is an important investment in your long-term health. If you have questions, would like to request a referral, or are ready to schedule your screening, please contact your local MedNOW Clinic or book an appointment through the link on our website. F or additional information, the CDC also provides helpful educational resources on colorectal cancer screening. Thank you for prioritizing your health and for trusting MedNOW with your care.
