“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”- Hippocrates This has become Dr. Sharkey’s new mantra since he has extended his study of traditional medicine to include integrative medicine, especially in the field of nutrition. Dr. Sharkey has been practicing medicine in Colorado for the past 40+ years. (Golden medical clinic, Columbine Family Practice Clinic). He’s passionate about the advances in medical technology and up-to-date, evidence-based medical research, especially as it relates to the inflammatory processes that cause chronic illness and a weakened immune system. He has found through personal experience that lifestyle changes can at times be more important than medication in reversing, as well as preventing, a disease process. For the past 10 years he has been following a whole food plant-based diet. He exercises regularly especially swimming, biking, and tennis.
He practices stress reduction with mindfulness meditation and yoga. By practicing what he preaches he has improved his overall health and reversed several medical conditions including cancer. He feels stronger, more alert and energetic at 75 than he did at 50. Many of his patients have been able to improve and some have been able to reverse their chronic illnesses following this practice (including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and more). He delights in encouraging his patients to take responsibility for their health. He feels with the advances in research in recent years, we have the ability to optimize our potential for staying youthful and healthy, protecting our immune system and avoiding chronic illness.
